I'm a Company Member!

I am so excited to get to share this great news! Last month I was invited to apply for company membership at Theatre Vertigo and…dramatic pause…I’M IN! I have been a big fan of Theatre Vertigo since moving to Portland four years ago and attending my first show there, The Drunken City, in 2015. I’ve watched the company ebb and flow and have seen company members come and go, and yet the drive, passion and immense commitment to quality theatre has always remained. I love the history of Theatre Vertigo and that it’s this creative place, run by different generations of artists, where new and/or edgy pieces get to be explored. I am beyond thrilled to get the opportunity to be a part of helping to keep Vertigo running successfully so that it stays healthy and vibrant for another 21 years (at least!).

Last night we had our Season 22 Announcement party and I wanted to share a little bit about each piece to get you excited for things to come! First up:

Complex by Dominic Finocchiaro, directed by Connery Macrae

Something strange is going on in the apartment complex. When residents start turning up dead in ever more gruesome ways, it’s left to busybody tenant Todd to sort out the mess and stop the bleeding. A dark comedy about modern living and other forms of mass murder.

From the Playwright:
Complex is a horror story that's also a love story that's also a comedy. Perhaps most of all, it's about connections: about our lack of connection in an increasingly alienating world, and about the ways we reach for connection in the midst of chaos. I am incredibly grateful that complex will have its world premiere in Portland, the city where I came of age and where the play was first workshopped, and that it will be produced by my old classmate Clara-Liis Hillier and directed by my wonderful friend Connery Macrae.

Stupid Ghost by Savannah Reich, directed by The Ensemble

The Ghost lived in the woods, Minding Her Own Business and definitely Not Haunting Anyone, until one day she saw a Pretty Girl and followed her home. It totally wasn’t even a thing. The Girl was probably not even going to notice. Stupid Ghost is a comedy about ruining the lives of the people you love and realizing the potential explosive power of your own desire. Stupid Ghost by Savannah Reich. Directed by The Ensemble (stay tuned to find out more about this exciting collaboration).

From the Playwright:
STUPID GHOST is a play inspired by 1950s melodramas about teenagers in Kansas who have sex and then die. There is a camp quality to it, and also at times an uncomfortable sincerity.

Everything You Touch by Sheila Callaghan; director TBA

Everything You Touch by Sheila Callaghan; director TBA

Everything You Touch is a viciously funny look at the struggle to find an identity that's more than skin deep. It explores the tumultuous ups and downs of our lives and the struggle to find an identity that is more than skin deep. Victor is a ruthless fashion designer in the 1970s at the top of his game. Esme, his glamorous protégé and muse, is pushed aside when an ordinary Midwestern woman inspires Victor to make his artistry accessible to the masses. A generation later, Jess, grappling with a healthy dose of self-loathing, must wrestle her own family demons to find her way through the world of fashion that won’t give a woman her size a second look. Join us as we adventure into a little weird cloud of delight, sadness and confusion.

And there you have it! Season 22 is on its way. The first show opens at the end of September. Keep an eye out for more information on each production. So excited to see where the future takes us!
